South Dakota 4-H has selected 11 outstanding young leaders to serve on the 2026-2027 State 4-H Ambassador Team. The program gives youth an opportunity to represent 4H across the state while building valuable leadership and communication skills.
The selected ambassadors come from different counties and will spend the next year supporting 4-H activities, encouraging youth participation, and sharing the benefits of the program with communities throughout South Dakota.
The State 4-H Ambassador Program is designed to help young people develop important life and leadership skills. Through hands-on experiences, ambassadors strengthen communication, public speaking, teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking abilities. These skills help students become stronger leaders in their schools, communities, and future careers.
The new ambassador team includes youth from 11 counties and communities across South Dakota. The selected members are:
- Taylor Hawley, Hanson County
- Mackenzie Mueller, Grant County
- Kayla Schweer, Grant County
- Jack Tinker, Minnehaha County
- Madelyn Lund, Turner County
- Teadon Seaboy, Brookings County
- Kelton King, Deuel County
- Adaline Larson, Day County
- Bellamy Westra, Lincoln County
- Ian Torsney, Bon Homme County
- Baylee Bender, Marshall County
These young leaders earn their positions after participating in interviews held during the 2026 South Dakota State Fair. The selection process recognizes youth who show strong leadership potential, dedication to service, and a commitment to personal development.
During their term, ambassadors participate in a variety of activities that help them gain real-world leadership experience. They attend leadership development retreats, meet with mentors, support statewide 4-H programs, and take part in educational outreach efforts. These opportunities allow them to learn from experienced leaders while developing skills that can benefit their communities.
The ambassadors also play an important role in public engagement. They help explain the value of 4-H programs to community leaders, families, and elected officials. Through advocacy efforts, they highlight how youth leadership programs support education, skill development, and community service. Their work helps increase awareness of the positive impact that 4H has throughout the state.
Each ambassador creates an individual action plan focused on personal and community goals. These plans encourage youth to take initiative, identify local needs, and develop projects that make a positive difference. This hands-on approach allows participants to gain practical experience while serving their communities.
Speaking about the importance of the program, Audrey Rider, SDSU Extension 4H Youth Engagement and Leadership Field Specialist, said, "State 4-H Ambassadors play a vital role in strengthening South Dakota 4-H by sharing their experiences and inspiring youth across the state. These young leaders demonstrate a commitment to service, leadership and personal growth, and we are excited to see the impact they will make during the coming year."
