South Dakota crop and soil conditions improve

South Dakota crop and soil conditions improve

By Scout Nelson

For the week ending November 17, 2024, the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service reported 6.3 days suitable for fieldwork in South Dakota. The favorable conditions allowed for further progress in crop harvesting, although moisture shortages continue to impact soil quality across the state.

Soil Moisture Conditions in South Dakota:

Topsoil moisture was rated 29% very short, 47% short, 24% adequate, and no surplus. Subsoil moisture conditions were similarly affected, with 28% rated very short, 44% short, and 28% adequate, indicating a general lack of surplus moisture. These moisture levels reflect ongoing dry conditions that can challenge crop and pasture growth.

Crop Harvest Progress:

The corn harvest in South Dakota reached 97% completion, ahead of last year's 91% and the five-year average of 86%. Winter wheat showed a range of conditions, with ratings of 4% very poor, 27% poor, 43% fair, 22% good, and 4% excellent. Winter wheat emergence was at 83%, slightly behind last year’s 95% and the average of 94%

Sorghum harvest progress was strong, with 96% completed, surpassing last year's 89% and the five-year average of 91%. The sunflower harvest was at 89%, also above last year and the five-year average, both at 78%.

Pasture and Range Conditions:

Pasture and range conditions across South Dakota reflected moisture challenges, with ratings of 21% very poor, 32% poor, 30% fair, and 17% good. None of the pastures were rated as excellent, showing the effects of the limited moisture availability.

Overall, this report highlights steady advancements in South Dakota’s crop harvest, despite soil moisture shortages impacting both crops and pasture conditions, emphasizing the importance of balanced moisture levels for agricultural sustainability in the state.
