South Dakota - top hemp producer

South Dakota - top hemp producer

By Scout Nelson

South Dakota has become a surprise leader in the U.S. hemp industry, ranking number one in both hemp fiber production and yield per acre. This achievement comes just three years after legalizing hemp cultivation in 2021, making it one of the last states to do so.

The state's success can be attributed to several factors. South Dakota's long daylight hours and moderate summer temperatures provide an ideal environment for hemp growth. Additionally, the soil conditions seem particularly well-suited to hemp, leading to higher yields compared to neighboring states.

Farmers are finding hemp to be a valuable addition to their crop rotations. Hemp's deep root system improves soil health and benefits subsequent crops.

South Dakota farmers cultivate three main hemp varieties: CBD, fiber, and grain/seed. The state currently holds the top spot for grain/seed production and has recently secured the number one position for fiber as well.

This rapid growth is driven by enthusiastic farmers and strong industry support. The South Dakota Industrial Hemp Association (SDIHA) plays a key role in providing information and resources to hemp growers across the state.

With its favorable climate, fertile soil, and dedicated farmers, South Dakota is poised to maintain its position as a leader in the U.S. hemp industry. The future looks bright for this versatile crop, offering potential for a wide range of applications.
