Winter Wheat Condition, Spring Wheat Emergence in South Dakota Both Ahead of Five Year Average


For the week ending June 4, 2023, there were 6.7 days suitable for fieldwork in South Dakota, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 9% very short, 46% short, 44% adequate, and 1% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 10% very short, 43% short, 47% adequate, and 0% surplus.

Field Crops Report:

Corn condition rated 1% very poor, 5% poor, 29% fair, 59% good, and 6% excellent. Corn planted was 97%, ahead of 92% last year and 87% for the five-year average. Emerged was 84%, ahead of 65% last year and 68% average.

Soybean condition rated 1% very poor, 4% poor, 35% fair, 56% good, and 4% excellent. Soybeans planted was 89%, ahead of 75% last year and 74% average. Emerged was 63%, well ahead of 32% last year, and ahead of 47% average.

Winter wheat condition rated 9% very poor, 23% poor, 40% fair, 26% good, and 2% excellent. Winter wheat headed was 49%, ahead of 30% last year and 34% average.

Spring wheat condition rated 1% very poor, 1% poor, 42% fair, 48% good, and 8% excellent. Spring wheat emerged was 96%, ahead of 90% last year and 91% average.

Oats condition rated 1% very poor, 4% poor, 32% fair, 55% good, and 8% excellent. Oats emerged was 95%, ahead of 87% last year and 89% average. Headed was 11%, ahead of 3% last year, and near 9% average.

Sorghum planted was 78%, well ahead of 49% last year and 54% average.

Sunflowers planted was 41%, ahead of 33% both last year and average. Emerged was 5%.

Pasture and Range Report:

Pasture and range conditions rated 3% very poor, 12% poor, 48% fair, 33% good, and 4% excellent.

For the week ending May 28, 2023, there were 6.7 days suitable for fieldwork in South Dakota, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 10% very short, 36% short, 53% adequate, and 1% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 11% very short, 40% short, 48% adequate, and 1% surplus.

Field Crops Report:

Winter wheat condition rated 9% very poor, 14% poor, 51% fair, 26% good, and 0% excellent. Winter wheat headed was 10%, equal to last year, and near 13% average. Spring wheat condition rated 2% very poor, 6% poor, 49% fair, 40% good, and 3% excellent.

Corn condition rated 0% very poor, 3% poor, 32% fair, 61% good, and 4% excellent. Corn planted was 92%, ahead of 83% last year and 79% for the five-year average. Emerged was 63%, well ahead of 39% last year, and ahead of 47% average.

Soybeans planted was 81%, well ahead of 57% last year and 58% average. Emerged was 36%, well ahead of 14% last year, and ahead of 25% average.

Spring wheat emerged was 88%, ahead of 83% last year and 80% average.

Oats condition rated 1% very poor, 9% poor, 40% fair, 47% good, and 3% excellent. Oats planted was 97%, ahead of 92% both last year and average. Emerged was 86%, ahead of 75% last year and 80% average.

Sorghum planted was 55%, well ahead of 34% last year, and ahead of 37% average.

Sunflowers planted was 28%, ahead of 21% last year and 19% average.

Pasture and Range Report:

Pasture and range conditions rated 6% very poor, 18% poor, 45% fair, 26% good, and 5% excellent.
