Winter wheat growth slower than expected

South Dakota’s crop report for the week ending November 24, 2024, highlights the final updates of the growing season. According to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, there were 5.4 days suitable for fieldwork.

Moisture Levels

Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 26% very short, 46% short, 28% adequate, and 0% surplus. Subsoil moisture levels reflected similar challenges, with 27% very short, 46% short, 27% adequate, and 0% surplus.

Winter Wheat Condition

Winter wheat conditions were reported as 3% very poor, 29% poor, 44% fair, 21% good, and 3% excellent. The emergence rate stood at 86%, lagging behind the 99% achieved last year and the five-year average of 98%.

Sunflower Harvest Progress

The sunflower harvest progressed strongly, reaching 94%. This surpassed both last year’s 86% and the five-year average of 85%, demonstrating significant improvement.

Pasture and Range Conditions

Pasture and range conditions remained challenging, with ratings of 26% very poor, 28% poor, 29% fair, 17% good, and 0% excellent, highlighting the need for better grazing resources.

Future Reporting

This marks the final weekly report of the 2024 season. Monthly reports will begin in December and continue through March. The first monthly report is scheduled for January 6, 2025, covering data until January 5. Weekly updates will resume in April 2025.
