South Dakotans Get Nearly Perfect Week Suitable for Fieldwork

For the week ending Sunday, there were 6.6 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 28% very short, 43% short, 29% adequate, and 0% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 39% very short, 39% short, 22% adequate, and 0% surplus.

Corn condition rated 14% very poor, 30% poor, 31% fair, 24% good, and 1% excellent. Corn dented was 86%, equal to last year, and ahead of 74% for the five-year average. Mature was 33%, behind 44% last year, but ahead of 22% average. Harvested was 1%, equal to last year.

Soybean condition rated 10% very poor, 31% poor, 39% fair, 19% good, and 1% excellent. Soybeans dropping leaves was 58%, equal to last year, and ahead of 40% average.

Winter wheat planted was 13%, behind 18% last year, but near 12% average.

Sorghum condition rated 10% very poor, 35% poor, 41% fair, 14% good, and 0% excellent. Sorghum coloring was 92%, equal to last year, and ahead of 74% average. Mature was 31%, near 29% last year, and ahead of 17% average. Harvested was 2%.

Pasture and range conditions rated 39% very poor, 41% poor, 15% fair, 5% good, and 0% excellent.
