Vermillion Area Robotics Association (VARA) is set to host a youth robotics tournament on Feb. 16 at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center. This will be the first of two events put on by the VARA whose teams have been consistently ranked among the top in the world.

The competition is for youth teams ranging from 3rd-8th grade. Participating teams will compete in a variety of areas that will challenge them to drive and program their robots through different obstacles and tasks. The competition will be broken up into five rounds:

- Judged Awards

- STEM Award

- Judges Awards

- Design Award

- Excellence Award

"The Coyote VEX IQ open is an opportunity to bring the most talented elementary and middle school kids in the region to compete and enjoy the amazing USD campus and Coyote Sports Center. We're excited to have STEM education be visible through robotics and VARA is delighted to host this second annual event," said Bill Anderson, VARA treasurer.

The tournament is free and open to the public. Teams will arrive around 8 a.m. The competition starts at 10 a.m. and finishes around 3 p.m. Teams can still sign up at www.roboticseducation.org.
