South Dakota Hay Stocks Up 17 Percent

South Dakota corn stocks in all positions on December 1, 2019 totaled 524 million bushels, down 19 percent from 2018, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Of the total, 370 million bushels are stored on farms, down 20 percent from a year ago. Off-farm stocks, at 154 million bushels, are down 19 percent from last year.

Soybeans stored in all positions totaled 149 million bushels, down 33 percent from last year. On-farm stocks of 62.0 million bushels are down 44 percent from a year ago, while off-farm stocks, at 86.8 million bushels, are down 23 percent from 2018.

All wheat stored in all positions totaled 61.7 million bushels, down 10 percent from a year ago.

On-farm stocks of 23.5 million bushels are down 16 percent from 2018, and off-farm stocks of 38.2 million bushels are down 5 percent from last year.

Oats stocks totaled 4.88 million bushels, down 6 percent from last year. On-farm stocks, at 3.40 million bushels, are down 11 percent from a year ago, while off-farm stocks, at 1.48 million bushels, are up 8 percent from 2018.

Barley on-farm stocks of 250,000 bushels are down 17 percent from a year ago.

Hay stocks on South Dakota farms totaled 6.25 million tons on December 1, 2019, up 17 percent from a year earlier.

Grain storage capacity in South Dakota totaled 1.17 billion bushels, up 10 million bushels from December 1, 2018. Total grain storage capacity is comprised of 730 million bushels of on-farm storage, unchanged from last year, and 435 million bushels of off-farm storage, up 10 million bushels from 2018.
