SDSU Honors Outstanding Animal Science Graduate for Leadership and Academic Excellence

South Dakota State University recently announced its selection of Anastasia Poull as the 2023 Outstanding Student in Animal Science. This prestigious award is bestowed upon senior animal science students who demonstrate exceptional leadership skills, engage in extracurricular activities, contribute to their community, and maintain outstanding academic performance.

Originally from Port Washington, Wisconsin, Poull actively participated in a wide range of campus extracurricular activities, including Little International, Country Swing Dance Club, the Pride of the Dakota’s Marching Band, Adopt-Brookings, Horse Club, American Sign Language Club, and served as a CAFES Ambassador. Through these engagements, Poull found avenues to explore her passions beyond her academic coursework while connecting with individuals from various backgrounds.

Poull appreciates the supportive faculty in the Department of Animal Science, who go beyond classroom roles to provide guidance on coursework, internships, and career opportunities.

Nominations for the Outstanding Student in Animal Science award are submitted by student organizations, faculty, and staff. Nominees are required to complete an application, including a personal statement and resumé. This year, a total of eleven students were nominated for this esteemed accolade.

Among the notable nominees were Kyerra Carter from Starbuck, Minnesota; Cade Currier from Onida, South Dakota; Amanda Dean from Spearfish, South Dakota; Aidan Friesen from Olivet, South Dakota; Tessa Herman from Barnesville, Minnesota; Aletta Husmann from Houston, Texas; Josephine Jenson from Welch, Minnesota; Johannah Nielsen from Tyler, Minnesota; Emily Nold from Brookings, South Dakota; Anastasia Poull from Port Washington, Wisconsin; and Samantha Thyen from Waverly, South
