South Dakota Ag Connection - 05/29/2020

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development State Director for South Dakota Julie Gross Thurday announced that the department is investing $1,802,000 for wastewater system upgrades in the City of Lemmon. USDA is funding the project through the Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant program.

"Having an up-to-date sanitary sewer system is very important to the livelihood of any community," said Gross. "The City of Lemmon is taking steps to make improvements to their wastewater treatment system for long term use. This system will improve the quality of life for members of the community. USDA is committed to partnering with rural communities to help improve their infrastructure, because when rural America thrives, all America thrives."

Eligible applicants include rural cities, towns, and water districts. The funds can be used for drinking water, stormwater drainage and waste disposal systems in rural communities that meet population limits.

The City of Lemmon will use the federal funding to repair their existing sewer system. The intent is to reline the existing sewer lines with Cured-in-Place-Pipe. Manholes and pipe that are beyond repair will be completely replaced. This project is a proactive approach to repairing the aging sewer collection system. The project will benefit 1,227 residents.

Thursday's announcement is part of a larger statement from USDA Deputy Under Secretary for Rural Development Bette Brand who announced that USDA is investing $281 million in 106 projects to improve water and wastewater infrastructure in rural communities in 36 states including Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming and Puerto Rico.
