BHSU Offering New Communication and Media Program

Black Hills State University is introducing a communication and media major this fall that will offer students career opportunities in social media, journalism, marketing, and more.

"It's designed for the generalist," said Dr. Amy Fuqua, interim associate provost at BHSU. "We want it to be a very applied program so that when students leave, they can get a job in the very broad area of communication and media."

The program will bridge various disciplines within the field of communications, from audio and video production to graphic design. Students will benefit from a collaboration of faculty that are professionals in their unique fields.

The communication and media major will also provide ample hands-on experience in BHSU clubs and organizations such as Shutter Buzz, the Public Relations club, and the Jacket Journal. The program will have a strong emphasis on internships and field experiences, allowing students to explore a broad field but also to pursue their particular interests.

"We're striving for a seamless connection between classroom experience and job experience," said Fuqua.

The program also allows students to focus on the areas of study within the program they are most interested in by offering a variety of courses to choose from within the major requirements.

Fuqua said they expect the program will start with around 75 enrolled students and believe it will be a popular major among future incoming classes.

"Companies need employees in communication who can do a lot of everything." Fuqua said. "Our goal is for this to be a very versatile major that will help our students meet the workforce needs in our region,"
