Boost your crops - DANR's grant program awaits you

By Scout Nelson

The South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) invites applications for its 2024 Specialty Crop Block Grant Program. This initiative aims to enhance the competitiveness of specialty crops in South Dakota, including fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, and nursery crops.

Eligible applicants range from governmental entities to individual producers, with a notable focus on innovation and sustainability in the agriculture sector. DANR Secretary Hunter Roberts emphasizes the program's role in supporting "the sustainable production and safe consumption of our specialty crops."

An informational session is set for February 21, offering insights into the application process. Interested parties should reach out to Timothy Schoonhoven for details on how to attend.

The grants, funded by the USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service, will support various projects, from production and market access to research and food safety. With funding available for up to three years, projects can extend from September 30, 2024, to September 29, 2027.

Applications must be submitted by March 24, 2024, via email to timothy.schoonhoven@state.sd.us. For more information and to access application materials, visit the DANR website.

"South Dakota agriculture continues to innovate and drive progress for our state," said Hunter Roberts, highlighting the program's impact.

This grant program represents a significant opportunity for those involved in specialty crop agriculture in South Dakota, offering a pathway to enhance production, sustainability, and market reach.
