CAFO training day set for December

CAFO training day set for December

By Scout Nelson

Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) operators have an important training opportunity on Wednesday, December 4, 2024. This training will take place at the Crossroads Convention Center located at 100 Fourth St. S.W. in Huron, SD.

Designed to ensure compliance with the 2017 General Water Pollution Control Permit, this session is vital for operators who have not participated in training since July 2017.

The day begins with registration at 8:15 a.m., followed by various presentations from distinguished experts in the field. Bob Thaler, a renowned SDSU Extension Swine Specialist, will kick off the program, followed by Sushant Mehan discussing key strategies for water quality management. The session will also delve into innovative livestock nutrition options to improve the content of manure, presented again by Bob Thaler.

Further into the program, attendees will learn about the South Dakota DANR Livestock Permit Program from Jason Roggow and witness practical demonstrations on soil erosion and infiltration by Kent Vlieger. Important topics such as managing nitrogen and phosphorus in land applications of manure will be addressed by Anthony Bly.

The training also includes a segment on the land application of manure worksheets led by Jason Gilb, and a discussion on air quality and odor management by Xufei Yang, capping off with a session for training evaluations and certificate distribution.

Preregistration for the event is required by December 3, with a registration fee of $50 covering lunch, breaks, and training materials. Additional participants from the same farm or operation can also register at adjusted rates.

This training is essential for CAFO operators seeking to remain compliant with environmental regulations and improve their operational impact on the environment. The comprehensive schedule ensures that every participant leaves well-equipped to implement effective environmental management strategies at their operations.
