U.S. agriculture looks to Thune's leadership

By Scout Nelson

The recent announcement of South Dakota Senator John Thune as the Majority Leader has been met with enthusiasm from the agricultural community. With a longstanding history of supporting agriculture and rural areas, Senator Thune's leadership is expected to be a major boon for the U.S. farming sector.

Doug Sombke, President of the South Dakota Farmers Union and a fourth-generation family farmer, expressed confidence in Thune’s understanding of the agricultural challenges faced by the nation. "Senator Thune understands the importance of agriculture to our state and America.

He has always been a great advocate for agriculture and rural communities. We are hopeful, with his leadership, the Farm Bill family farmers and ranchers need will finally get passed,” Sombke stated.

The urgency for a new Farm Bill is heightened by the ongoing struggles within the agricultural sector, including low commodity prices and adverse natural conditions such as droughts and wildfires, which have significantly impacted the growing season. The last Farm Bill, passed in 2018, is overdue for an update to better address these current challenges.

Farmers across the country are particularly hard-hit, with many finding it difficult to sustain their operations financially. "The families who raise crops and livestock to feed Americans are struggling to pay their own grocery bills," explained Sombke. The new Farm Bill is expected to offer critical protections and resources to support these essential workers.

The agricultural community is optimistic that Senator Thune’s role as Majority Leader will facilitate the passing of the new Farm Bill swiftly. His proven track record and commitment to agriculture advocate effectively for the needs and challenges of U.S. farmers at a national level, promising a brighter future for those who form the backbone of America’s food supply.
