South Dakota ranchers and students of agriculture will soon have an opportunity to explore the transition into organic beef production through a special field day event. The gathering will take place on August 22, 2025, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mountain Time, offering practical guidance and shared experiences.
The event will feature rancher Carl Poss and Dr. Angela Jackson, branded meat marketer and advisor with the South Dakota Specialty Producers Association. Together, they will discuss the realities of moving into organic production.
Their sessions will focus on certification requirements, nutrition and feed sourcing challenges, detailed recordkeeping, and the difficulties and rewards of entering the growing organic beef market.
Dr. Jackson brings expertise in navigating organic certification, while Poss offers practical lessons from his ranch. Both highlight what works and what does not when trying to build a resilient and regenerative beef operation.
Adding to the program, Pat Guptill, a rancher from Quinn and former board member of the South Dakota Grasslands Coalition, will share his approach to raising cattle without pesticides or herbicides.
His work demonstrates how careful pasture management can support healthy cattle and sustainable land use. Guptill will also lead a pasture walk, giving participants firsthand views of organic management practices.
The field day is designed not only for experienced ranchers but also for those beginning their journey toward organic and regenerative beef production. Attendees will walk away with practical strategies, insights from industry experts, and encouragement from producers who have faced similar challenges.
