South Dakota State University has set a national milestone by becoming the first four-year animal science program in the United States to receive accreditation from the American Society of Animal Science. This recognition highlights the university’s strong foundation in education, research, and outreach.
The journey to accreditation took about 15 months and involved a detailed review of curriculum, faculty expertise, and student opportunities. Faculty members led a comprehensive self-study, followed by a site visit where reviewers met with students, staff, and industry leaders. Final approval came in July 2025 at the American Society of Animal Science annual meeting.
The department’s faculty played a key role in achieving this honor. With advanced degrees and years of experience, they bring knowledge and energy to classrooms and hands-on learning. Leaders note that this achievement reflects the long tradition of excellence established by past and current educators.
Hands-on opportunities remain central to the program. Students gain experience at livestock units near campus, the meat laboratory, internships, and even study abroad programs. These practical experiences prepare graduates for careers in livestock management, animal nutrition, meat science, and related fields.
The accreditation also points to areas for future growth, such as upgrading facilities, adding courses in animal behavior, and lowering the student-to-faculty ratio. Faculty view these as opportunities to further strengthen the program.
While the achievement brings national recognition, its true value lies in student-focused education. The department continues to build on its mission of preparing students to succeed in agriculture and serve their communities.
