KBJM Farm Show Features Free Extension Learning Sessions

By Scout Nelson

SDSU Extension invites community members, farmers, and ranchers to attend educational presentations during the KBJM Farm and Home Show on Friday, March 13 in Lemmon, South Dakota. The event will take place at two locations in the city: the Palace Theater and the Beeler Community Center.

The educational seminars will be held at the Palace Theater, located at 209 Main Avenue. These sessions are designed to provide useful information for agricultural producers as well as community members interested in leadership, gardening, and farm safety. The seminars are free to attend, and participants do not need to register in advance.

Throughout the day, SDSU Extension and NDSU Extension specialists will present a series of informative sessions focused on practical topics that support rural communities and agricultural operations.

The first seminar begins at 10:00 a.m. with “Stepping Up Becoming a Better Board Member,” presented by Dacia Hilkemeier, SDSU Extension Community Vitality Field Specialist. The session discusses how organizations can strengthen leadership by helping current board members become more effective and engaged in their roles.

At 11:00 a.m., Logan Vandermark, SDSU Extension Precision Livestock Field Specialist, will present “EID Use for Enhancing Livestock Management.” The session explains how Electronic Identification technology helps producers improve herd management, track animal data, and support better decisions related to breeding and health monitoring.

The noon session will focus on gardening practices for the region. Nick Volesky, SDSU Extension Horticulture and Specialty Crops Field Specialist, will present “Gardening Timeline for the Western Dakotas.” The presentation will guide participants through the gardening season, including seed starting, transplanting, soil fertility, irrigation, pest management, and harvest timing.

The final session at 1:00 p.m. highlights farm safety. Aspen Lenning from NDSU Extension Adams County will present “Farm Safety Keeping All 10 Fingers Since 1910.” The presentation explores common farm hazards and emphasizes simple practices that help prevent injuries on farms and ranches.

In addition to the seminars, Extension staff from SDSU and NDSU will host informational booths at the Beeler Community Center from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Visitors can stop by to ask questions, learn about available Extension programs, and explore resources that support agriculture and rural communities.
