The 2026 AgFest, held on Feb. 2 in Pierre, South Dakota, continued to serve as an important event for the state’s agricultural community. Sponsored by the Ag Unity Coalition, the event brought together private organizations, government agencies, and industry leaders during the legislative session.
The goal was to create opportunities for discussion between agricultural groups, policymakers, and stakeholders who help shape the future of farming in the state.
The South Dakota Specialty Producers Association (SDSPA) marked its 12th consecutive year participating in AgFest with an informational booth. This year, the organization focused on raising awareness about specialty crops and the important role farmers markets play in South Dakota’s local food system. By attending the event, SDSPA was able to connect directly with legislators and decision-makers, helping ensure that local producers have a voice in agricultural conversations and policy discussions.
Specialty crops and farmers markets continued to grow in importance as consumers showed more interest in locally produced food. SDSPA used AgFest as a platform to explain how these sectors support rural communities, strengthen local economies, and provide more food choices for consumers. The event also allows producers to share their experiences and challenges while building relationships with leaders who influence agricultural policy.
Another major focus at AgFest 2026 was the transition to organic farming. SDSPA highlighted this topic through its Transition to Organic Partnership Program (TOPP) grant, which supported producers interested in moving toward organic production methods. The program helped farmers understand the process, learn best practices, and explore new market opportunities.
Overall, AgFest remained a valuable space where agriculture groups, policymakers, and industry professionals work together. SDSPA’s participation helps promote specialty crops, farmers markets, and organic farming while supporting the long-term growth and sustainability of South Dakota agriculture.
