The South Dakota Specialty Producers Association (SDSPA) joins farmers markets across the country to celebrate National Farmers Market Week from August 3 to 9, 2025. This annual event highlights the importance of farmers markets in building strong local food systems.
National Farmers Market Week is led by the Farmers Market Coalition (FMC), a nonprofit group that supports markets across the country. It is recognized by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to honor the role that markets play in providing fresh food, supporting local farmers, and creating community connections.
For over 50 years, farmers markets have helped shape how Americans buy food and interact with local producers. These markets offer more than just fruits and vegetables, they are places where people gather, share knowledge, and support one another.
South Dakota is home to 50 farmers markets located in different parts of the state. SDSPA keeps an updated online list that includes market locations, hours of operation, available products, and more. Anyone can visit the SDSPA website to find a nearby market.
Many South Dakota markets will host special events during the celebration week. The Brookings Farmers Market will have Pollinator Day on August 9, with games, prizes, and fun educational activities. The Brandon Farmers Market will mark Sioux Falls Navy Week with a performance by the Navy Band Great Lakes from 11 a.m. to noon the same day.
To help markets grow, SDSPA also formed the South Dakota Farmers Market Coalition. This group meets online every quarter and provides training, resources, and networking for market members. SDSPA members can join for a small fee.
