SDSU Hosts Specialty Crop Field Day with Research Tours

By Scout Nelson

South Dakota State University (SDSU) is hosting its fifth annual Specialty Crop Field Day, offering a hands-on learning experience focused on small to mid-size commercial vegetable production. This event takes place directly east of the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center in Brookings, with signs marked “SDSU Extension Horticulture” to guide attendees to parking.

This family-friendly field day is open to beginning and experienced specialty crop producers, Master Gardeners, non-profit groups, technical advisors, and home gardeners. Everyone interested in vegetable growing and specialty crops is encouraged to attend.

Participants will explore eight unique research plots featuring a variety of crops like cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, pumpkins, and cut flowers. The event will include discussions on soil health, crop timing, and disease management. One highlight includes tours of four new caterpillar tunnels and two high tunnels used for season extension and crop protection.

Educational booths staffed by SDSU faculty, SDSU Extension specialists, and local organizations will share information and tools to support specialty crop success in South Dakota. This event is also a great chance to connect with students, researchers, and fellow growers.

Guests should prepare for moderate walking distances and wear shoes suitable for farm fields. Children are welcome with a parent or guardian, but pets should be left at home. Anyone needing accommodation should contact Kristine Lang at least one week before the event.
