SDSU Launches Global Agriculture Leadership Master's Degree Program

SDSU Launches Global Agriculture Leadership Master's Degree Program

By Scout Nelson

South Dakota State University (SDSU) introduces a new master’s degree program focused on global agricultural leadership. Approved by the South Dakota Board of Regents, this 14-month course trains students to become skilled leaders in agriculture and rural development.

The program is designed to meet the rising demand for professionals with strong leadership, communication, ethics, and agribusiness skills. Students will gain both classroom knowledge and practical experience to prepare for leadership roles across the agriculture industry.

From 2017 to 2022, agriculture had the highest growth rate among South Dakota’s major economic sectors. With a projected 5.5% increase in agricultural leadership roles across the nation, SDSU’s program arrives at a key time.

The curriculum combines courses from three SDSU colleges: Agriculture, Management and Economics, and Engineering. This mix gives students a wide understanding of how different parts of agriculture work together.

Students will also take part in domestic and international travel to learn about different farming methods and markets. A key part of the course is the “enhanced internship,” where students attend leadership meetings and work closely with industry experts.

The first class of 20 students will begin in May 2026, after the program receives final approval from the Higher Learning Commission. Students from many undergraduate backgrounds are welcome to apply.

SDSU has received strong support from companies and organizations, with donations covering startup costs, travel, and scholarships. Supporters include the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council, Farm Credit Services of America, Millborn Seeds, Agtegra Cooperative, and others.

This master’s program builds on SDSU’s existing undergraduate certificate in global agricultural leadership, now open for enrollment. To learn more, interested students can contact SDSU’s academic office.
