2025 Tri-State Drainage Research Forum Coming to Brookings

By Scout Nelson

South Dakota State University Extension is excited to announce the 2025 Tri-State Drainage Research Forum, scheduled for Sept. 9-10 at McCrory Gardens in Brookings. This annual event will bring together key stakeholders to explore the latest developments in water management, drainage systems, and conservation practices.

The forum provides an excellent opportunity for agricultural producers, water managers, drainage contractors, and conservation leaders to connect and learn from experts in the field. Attendees will gain insights into innovative strategies, policy updates, and best practices for improving drainage, nutrient efficiency, and water conservation in the Upper Midwest.

For just $85, professionals can attend, while students can join for $25. Those interested in attending can register through the SDSU Extension Events page by searching “drainage”.

On Sept. 9, attendees will participate in field tours led by experts like Jay Gilbertson from the East Dakota Water Development District and Wayne Smith of the South Dakota Ag Wetland Exchange. These tours will focus on wetland banking and riparian area management, providing real-world examples of drainage and conservation in action. A networking social will follow at Cubby’s in downtown Brookings.

The forum will continue on Sept. 10 with expert presentations on several key topics, including:

  • Economic and environmental benefits of drainage water recycling
  • Modernizing systems for wildlife habitat and climate resilience
  • Farmer perspectives on edge-of-field conservation
  • Latest research on nitrogen use efficiency and drainage

Panel discussions will also explore socio-economic dynamics, cost-sharing, and collaborative efforts in drainage modernization.
