In South Dakota, anyone wishing to work as a commercial pesticide applicator must first be certified before obtaining a license. Certification ensures that applicators have the knowledge and skills to safely handle and apply pesticides.
Who Needs Certification
Commercial certification applies to individuals who apply pesticides for pay, advertise such services, work in government pest control roles, or handle powerful pesticide formulations. Because these applicators work in areas with higher public exposure and often use stronger chemicals, they are held to stricter standards than private applicators.
Certification Categories
South Dakota licenses are issued by category, based on the type of pest control work performed. For example, category 1 covers agricultural plants, while category 15 covers wood-destroying pests. All applicators must pass the Category G “General” exam, which focuses on core pesticide safety and laws. Additional category exams are required for specific applications.
Exam Process
Certification exams are taken in person at SDSU Extension Regional Centers or participating county offices. Each exam allows up to four hours for completion, and applicants are encouraged to schedule the full time. Exams are open-reference, with approved materials provided during testing.
Preparation Tips
Before the exam, review the EPA’s National Applicator Certification Core Manual and South Dakota’s Summary of Pesticide Laws and Regulations. Learn to use tables of contents, appendices, and digital search functions efficiently. Manage stress by dressing comfortably, taking breaks, and focusing on one question at a time.
Why It Matters
Certification helps protect public health, the environment, and agricultural productivity. By following the correct process and preparing well, applicants increase their chances of passing and becoming licensed professionals in the field.
