Preparing Calves for Fall Sales and Healthy Weaning Season

Preparing Calves for Fall Sales and Healthy Weaning Season

By Scout Nelson

In the Upper Midwest, most calves are born during the spring calving season, from January to May. As fall approaches, many producers prepare for marketing calves or giving preconditioning shots before weaning. Calves often range from four to eight months old, so vaccination schedules, sale timing, and feed plans may vary.

Preconditioning Shots
Preconditioning helps calves handle the stress of weaning or shipping. Vaccinations, often including 5-way viral and 7-way clostridial vaccines, protect against respiratory and clostridial diseases. Best practices suggest booster shots three to four weeks after the first dose for a stronger immune response. Producers should work with veterinarians to design the best program for different calf ages and to schedule other management tasks, like castration or dehorning. Even calves sold directly off the cow benefit from preconditioning, as it supports calf health and buyer confidence.

Sale Planning
Early communication with the auction market is essential. Inform them about the number of calves, sale timing, and processing history. A written record of all vaccinations, parasite treatments, implants, castration methods, and feed exposure should be provided. Veterinary clinics can often prepare these forms for the market. Announcing detailed health and handling records increases buyer trust and can encourage repeat sales.

Feed Availability
As forage quality declines in late summer, weaning can help preserve resources for cows while adding value to calves. Producers should check feed inventory, calculate needs, and purchase additional feed or supplements before calves enter the weaning pen. Younger calves require more nutrients than older ones, so working with a nutritionist to create age-appropriate rations is important.
