Controlling Waterhemp for Cleaner Farm Fields

Controlling Waterhemp for Cleaner Farm Fields

By Jamie Martin

With spring planting approaching, farmers are focused on controlling early-season weeds. Fast-growing species like waterhemp can spread rapidly, particularly from field edges, and survive initial herbicide applications if not managed properly.

Farmers report positive results with Liberty® ULTRA. One grower shared, “We went out with Liberty®, and it just plain worked,” showing how effective herbicide use can lead to clean fields and better crop growth. Others emphasized that waterhemp management has been difficult in past years, highlighting the need for reliable solutions.

Effective weed management requires attention to local conditions. Knowing which herbicides work best in specific regions and applying them at the right time is essential to reduce resistant weed pressure. Combining proper herbicide use with good crop rotation helps maintain field health and ensures better yields.

BASF invites farmers to share their experiences with Liberty® ULTRA through “ULTRAmonials.” These testimonials allow growers to exchange knowledge and gain insight into practical weed control methods. Submissions also qualify for a chance to win a Milwaukee® PACKOUT™ Storage System, providing both learning and incentive.

Proactive planning, proper herbicide application, and careful monitoring are key to keeping weeds under control. Maintaining clean fields reduces competition, protects crops, and helps farmers manage resistant species effectively. With these strategies, farmers can enjoy healthier crops, higher yields, and long-term farm productivity.
