SDSU Garden Hour Starts May 5

SDSU Garden Hour Starts May 5

By Scout Nelson

South Dakota State University Extension is starting a new season of Garden Hour, a popular webinar series for gardeners across the state. The 2026 season begins on May 5 and offers free learning sessions led by gardening experts.

Garden Hour is organized by the SDSU Extension horticulture team. The program gives short and useful presentations on seasonal gardening topics. During the growing season, webinars are held every Tuesday. During the off-season, sessions are offered every other month.

The regular season starts at 7 p.m. CDT each Tuesday from May 5 through Aug. 25, 2026. Registration is required to receive the Zoom link. One registration signs people up for the full series. Participants receive confirmation emails, webinar links, and reminders before each session.

The program welcomes gardeners of all experience levels. Beginners can learn basic skills, while experienced gardeners can gain advanced tips. Master Gardeners may also earn continuing education credit by attending live sessions.

The first webinar will be led by Amanda Bachmann, SDSU Extension Urban Entomology Field Specialist, along with graduate student Kristina Harms. They will discuss how to grow sweet corn successfully.

The second session features Nick Volesky, SDSU Extension Horticulture and Specialty Crops Field Specialist, and Prairey Walkling, SDSU Extension Master Gardener Field Specialist. They will share guidance on growing raspberries in South Dakota.

Bachmann says the webinar series gives gardeners direct access to experts who understand local growing conditions and common plant problems.

“This is our sixth season, and I can't wait to hear what questions South Dakota gardeners have for us,” Bachmann said. “I'm looking forward to visiting with our new and returning experts to chat about what's growing this year.”

People who miss live sessions can watch recordings later on the SDSU Extension YouTube channel. Gardeners may also send questions through the Ask Extension tool or contact the Garden Hotline nearest them via the SDSU Extension Problems and Solutions page. Residents can subscribe to the Garden and Yard newsletter for regular tips and updates.
