The 2023 American Gelbvieh Junior Association Great Dakota Classic brought approximately 600 visitors and showcased around 350 head of cattle at the South Dakota State Fairgrounds in Huron, South Dakota. Hosted by the South Dakota Gelbvieh Junior Association, this highly anticipated event took place from July 2nd to 7th.
The junior national show provided young participants aged 8 to 21 from across the United States and Canada with a range of activities to engage in. Families gathered for this event, often spanning multiple generations, to proudly exhibit their hard work and accomplishments.
The national show attracted individuals involved in the Gelbvieh breed, even without cattle of their own. The event served as a meeting place for people from across North America, fostering a sense of camaraderie within the community.
Jaycie Forbes, the former American Gelbvieh Junior Association President, highlighted the wide range of activities available to participants. From video contests to graphic design and public speaking, the show offered something for everyone. The event also prioritized mentorship, pairing newcomers with experienced individuals to provide guidance and support.
The Junior National Show was not exclusive to cattle exhibitors alone. Families from various backgrounds, including those without cattle operations, participated by showcasing heifers or cows they specifically kept for their children's involvement.
The Great Dakota Classic was a celebration of agriculture, friendship, and the skills of young showmen and showwomen. The American Gelbvieh Junior Association's commitment to providing a comprehensive and inclusive experience ensured that participants, regardless of their interests, created lasting memories and formed lifelong connections in the vibrant world of livestock exhibitions.
