The US Department of Agricultural Marketing (AMS) is actively seeking nominations for the Beef Promotion and Research Board (CBB) to fill the positions of the 27 members whose terms expire in March 2024. Vacancies include various states including Dakota South, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Wisconsin, Southwest Unit (California and Nevada) and as import units.
The CBB is responsible for administering a beef research and promotion program aimed at expanding and sustaining markets for beef and beef products at home and abroad. The program is funded through a mandatory US$1 per head of livestock sold, including imported cattle, beef and beef products.
Out of the approximately $75 million collected in assessments, the Cattleman's Beef Promotion and Research Board receives around $42 million, while the remaining funds are allocated to Qualified State Beef Councils. Under the oversight of AMS, the Board spearheads the industry's research and promotion activities.
According to the latest economic assessment, between 2014 and 2018, the beef research and promotion program generated an estimated return of $11.91 for every $1 invested. This underscores the effectiveness of the program in increasing demand for beef.
The Farmers' Beef Promotion and Research Council consists of 101 members from 34 states, four geographic divisions and one import unit. The Secretary selects one-third of the Council members annually from among cattle producers and importers recommended by eligible organizations.
