The South Dakota Farmers Union recently celebrated the contributions of Minority Leader Oren Lesmeister and Majority Leader Will Mortenson by awarding them the Service to Agriculture accolades.
This recognition took place during the South Dakota Farmers Union Legislative Day in Pierre, underscoring their commitment to the state's primary economic sector, agriculture.
Both leaders have deep roots in agriculture, growing up on cattle ranches in South Dakota and maintaining strong ties to the farming and ranching community.
Their personal and professional experiences have shaped their understanding of and dedication to agricultural issues, making them influential advocates within the legislative process.
Oren Lesmeister, balancing his time between legislating and running a cow/calf operation alongside his wife, Tracy, also operates a feed store, Fox Ridge Ag Supply. His journey into politics was inspired by a call to serve from his community and a passion to represent agricultural interests at the state level.
Will Mortenson, who also has a rich background in ranching, chose to specialize in agriculture law, aiming to become a staunch advocate for farmers and ranchers. His work includes assisting in succession planning, ensuring agricultural lands remain within families for generations.
Mortenson's decision to run for office was driven by a desire to contribute positively to the state's legislative process and protect the agricultural way of life.
Their stories highlight the importance of having representatives who truly understand the challenges and aspirations of the farming community.
As South Dakota's agricultural landscape evolves, the dedication of leaders like Lesmeister and Mortenson ensures that the voices of family farmers and ranchers are heard, preserving the state's agricultural heritage and fostering a sustainable future for the industry.
