SDSU Extension and the American Sheep Industry Young and Emerging Entrepreneurs will host a Spring Lambing Field Day on Saturday, April 12, 2025. The event will take place from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. CDT at a sheep operation located in Pierre, South Dakota.
This field day is designed for anyone interested in learning more about lambing procedures and sheep management. It offers a practical opportunity to gain hands-on experience with essential lambing barn skills.
The event will focus on important lamb care practices such as docking, tagging, and vaccinating. Participants will also learn about helpful procedures like tubing lambs and splinting injured legs. These techniques are vital for improving survival rates and overall animal health.
In addition, the program will include discussions on udder health and making culling decisions for both ewes and lambs. Understanding when and how to make these decisions helps improve the productivity and health of a flock.
“Registration is free and open to anyone looking to improve their skills in the lambing barn,” say the event organizers. Attendees are encouraged to come ready to learn and participate in the hands-on activities.
This event is suitable for all experience levels—from beginners interested in starting a flock to those who want to improve their lambing success. It also offers a chance to network with others in the sheep industry and learn from experts in the field.
Registration is available through a form provided by the organizers. For those who want more information, contact details are available for a sheep field specialist.
Whether you're a student, a new producer, or simply curious about sheep farming, this field day is a valuable chance to gain practical knowledge and improve animal care skills.
