The South Dakota State University (SDSU) College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences has announced interim leadership appointments to guide key Extension programs during a time of transition.
Dr. Alexander “Sandy” Smart is named interim director of SDSU Extension, following the retirement of former director Karla Trautman. Smart has led Extension’s Agriculture and Natural Resources programs for the last four years and has more than 20 years of teaching and research experience.
He says he is honored to serve and looks forward to strengthening relationships with stakeholders, improving communication, and supporting Extension staff in their work.
Dr. Rosie Nold has been appointed interim program director of South Dakota 4-H. Nold, who currently serves as director of global agricultural leadership programs, brings decades of 4-H involvement at county, state, and national levels.
She has served on several national committees, including the National 4-H Livestock Skillathon Committee. Nold says she is committed to advancing youth education and building on the strength of 4-H programs across the state. She will serve in this role through the 2026 South Dakota State Fair.
Heather Gessner, a longtime livestock business management field specialist, is stepping in as interim leader of Extension’s Agriculture and Natural Resources programming while Smart serves as interim director.
With more than 24 years of Extension service, she supports farmers and ranchers with financial planning, farm transitions, and rural behavioral health issues. Gessner says she is excited to guide her team and support staff as they continue to deliver meaningful programs.
Dean Joe Cassady says he appreciates the three leaders stepping forward, expressing confidence in their ability to continue impactful work. Nationwide searches for the permanent Extension director and 4-H program director are expected to begin soon.
