Scoop It Snow Removal Program Discontinued
South Dakota Ag Connection - 11/14/2017
The Department of Corrections ‘Scoop It' snow removal program is being discontinued.
"The department takes pride in providing quality community service opportunities. However, the ‘Scoop It' program has evolved to a point where the DOC is no longer able to responsibly meet the supervision needs for this program," said Corrections
Secretary Denny Kaemingk.
Minimum-security inmates supervised by a correctional staff member removed snow for elderly and disabled homeowners who either couldn't do the work themselves or couldn't afford to pay someone to do so.
Community resource organizations conducted a screening of those asking for the assistance and notified the prison unit of the qualified addresses in Sioux Falls, Yankton, Rapid City and Pierre.
The ‘Scoop It' program was started in Sioux Falls back in 2001 and expanded to the other communities where DOC has minimum-security units.
