S.D. Hog Inventory Up 10 Percent at Record High

South Dakota inventory of all hogs and pigs on March 1, 2020, was a record high 2.03 million head, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. This was up 10 percent from March 1, 2019, and up 1 percent from December 1, 2019.

Breeding hog inventory, at 285,000 head, was up 16 percent from March 1, 2019, and up 2 percent from last quarter. Market hog inventory, at 1.75 million head, was up 9 percent from last year, and up 1 percent from last quarter.

The December 2019 - February 2020 South Dakota pig crop, at 1.71 million head, was up 21 percent from 2019. Sows farrowed during the period totaled 141,000 head, up 18 percent from last year. The average pigs saved per litter was a record high 12.10 for the December - February period, compared to 11.85 last year.

South Dakota hog producers intend to farrow 140,000 sows during the March - May 2020 quarter, up 14 percent from the actual farrowings during the same period a year ago. Intended farrowings for June - August 2020 are 139,000 sows, up 8 percent from the actual farrowings during the same period a year ago.
