$1.4 Million Boost for South Dakota's Rural Energy Savings

$1.4 Million Boost for South Dakota's Rural Energy Savings

By Scout Nelson

The U.S.  Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development has introduced a new initiative under the guidance of South Dakota State Director Nikki Gronli. Announced recently, this program directs more than $1.4 million in grants towards agricultural producers and small rural businesses throughout South Dakota.

The goal is to implement energy efficiency improvements and renewable energy projects that promise to lower energy costs and bolster the economic resilience of these operations.

Reflecting on the broader impact of these initiatives, Director Gronli highlighted the administration's commitment to rural development: “Under the administration, we've funneled over $8. 7 million into rural South Dakota through the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP). These investments not only cut down energy expenses but also pave the way for new income opportunities and operational strengthening for rural business owners and agricultural producers. ”

This latest funding allocation will support eight significant projects across rural South Dakota, marking a crucial step in the state's journey towards enhanced energy efficiency and sustainability.  These efforts are part of a larger, nationwide strategy, with the USDA committing $120 million to 541 renewable energy and energy efficiency projects across 44 states through REAP.

For those interested in exploring the possibilities of REAP or applying for funding, the USDA continues to welcome applications. With quarterly funding competitions set to run until September 30, 2024, there's ample opportunity for rural businesses and agricultural producers to engage.

This round of funding notably includes a dedicated segment for underutilized renewable energy technologies, underscoring the USDA's commitment to diverse and innovative energy solutions.

This investment not only exemplifies the USDA's dedication to fostering sustainable rural development but also underscores the critical role of energy efficiency and renewable energy in securing a more resilient and prosperous future for rural communities across South Dakota.
