$15K Grants Available for Farmers Transitioning to Crops

By Jamie Martin

Farmers looking to transition away from animal agriculture now have an opportunity to receive financial support. The Physicians Committee is offering farm transition grants of up to $15,000 for those shifting from dairy, poultry, or livestock farming to growing crops, fruits, nuts, or mushrooms.

These grants are open to farmers who are either phasing out animal agriculture or inheriting land and seeking alternative farming methods. “Blueberries, beans, greens, and other plant-based foods grown by U.S. farmers can help people improve heart health, prevent diabetes, and maintain a healthy weight, among other benefits,” said Roxanne Becker, a medical doctor with the Physicians Committee.

Farmers interested in applying must email Jeanne at jeannem@pcrm.org with details about their current farming operation, intended use of the grant, and reasons for transitioning. The application deadline is June 3, 2025.

Farm transitions are already underway across the country. Former dairy and poultry farmers are repurposing their land for fruit orchards, vegetable farms, and even mushroom cultivation. In North Carolina, farmers Paula and Dale Boles converted their poultry barns into greenhouses for organic produce.

Support for transitioning farmers is growing, with proposals for federal funding aimed at helping livestock farmers shift toward sustainable agriculture. Programs like the Transfarmation Project and initiatives by U.S. lawmakers aim to provide financial relief and technical support for transitioning farms.

As consumer demand for plant-based foods rises, transitioning farmers may find new market opportunities while also contributing to environmental sustainability and improved public health.
