Governor Larry Rhoden has taken swift action to enhance wildfire response across South Dakota. On April 1, he signed Executive Order 2025-03, providing essential support for South Dakota Wildland Fire (SDWF) operations.
The executive order grants standing authorization for South Dakota National Guard resources to be deployed when needed. This includes Black Hawk helicopters and other vital support tools to assist in ongoing and future firefighting efforts across the state.
“During a fire, every second counts, and red tape shouldn’t stand in the way of saving lives,” said Governor Larry Rhoden. “This order will allow our National Guard to support firefighters to keep South Dakotans safe and our communities strong.”
The decision reflects the state’s ongoing commitment to protecting both people and property in rural and agricultural areas. With wildfires becoming more frequent and intense due to dry conditions, strong winds, and other environmental challenges, rapid action is essential.
By authorizing National Guard assistance in advance, the order removes delays and ensures immediate availability of resources when wildfires occur. This includes rapid helicopter deployment, equipment transport, and personnel support.
The collaboration between SDWF and the National Guard will strengthen firefighting capacity, improve emergency response times, and help control fires more efficiently before they spread.
This move is part of broader efforts to enhance disaster preparedness and support rural communities, many of which are impacted by fire threats each year.
Through this order, South Dakota is better equipped to respond to emergencies and safeguard its land, livelihoods, and natural resources. It highlights the importance of coordination, readiness, and decisive leadership during wildfire events.
