South Dakota State University (SDSU) Extension has announced the addition of Kaylyn Rudy as the new Swine Field Specialist. Based in Mitchell, Rudy will support swine producers by identifying their challenges and delivering research-driven guidance to improve their operations.
Rudy brings both academic knowledge and practical experience to the role. She aims to support producers and help their businesses grow while also promoting education and inspiring young people to consider careers in agriculture. “I look forward to helping producers and their operations thrive,” said Rudy. “I am also excited about creating educational opportunities for all and encouraging the next generation of agriculturalists and swine producers.”
Originally from Illinois, Rudy was raised on a farm where she participated in 4-H and showed horses and cattle. She earned her bachelor’s degree in agricultural science with a focus on animal science from Western Illinois University. She then completed a master’s degree at Purdue University, specializing in swine reproductive physiology.
Her academic research has explored key topics in swine health, including fetal development and the spread of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) from sows to their piglets during pregnancy. These studies have contributed valuable insights into disease management in swine production.
Before joining SDSU Extension, Rudy held positions such as Head of Animal Care at Premier BioSource, a biomedical swine facility, and worked as a Swine Service Technician at Indiana Packers Corporation. Her combined academic background and hands-on experience make her well-equipped to address the needs of the swine industry.
“Kaylyn Rudy joins the SDSU Extension team with great academic training and real-world experience in the swine industry,” said Sandy Smart, SDSU Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources Senior Program Leader and professor. “We are very excited to have her join us to improve the swine industry in South Dakota and the surrounding region.”
With her strong foundation in animal science and commitment to producer success, Rudy is expected to play a key role in supporting the growth and sustainability of swine farming across the region.
