Harvest of the spring wheat crop in North Dakota is still well behind average at 34% complete, compared to 66% on average, according to the most recent USDA Crop Progress report. Of the crop that has not been harvested, 78% is mature, behind the average of 95%. The past few weeks many producers have struggled to get consistent, long harvest days in due to scattered precipitation and high humidity. The current week's forecast looks to be warm and dry for most of the state which should allow for decent harvest progress.
Yield reports so far have varied quite a bit with some producers reporting yields below expectations and many finding yields higher than expected. Yield varies depending on area and planting date. Test weights have been strong with most in the 60-62 pound per bushel range. Protein levels have been slightly lower in some areas, but the overall reported range is 12.5 to 16% protein, which indicates a fairly average protein year so far. No major quality issues or concerns have been reported. More detailed quality data will be available as samples are received and processed at the NDSU Wheat Quality Lab.
Other states' harvests have progressed more rapidly with South Dakota now 92% complete, followed by Montana at 75% and Minnesota at 44%. The U.S. crop is 50% harvested, compared to 71% on average. Crop condition ratings on the unharvested crop remain fairly steady with 68% rated in good to excellent condition.
The North Dakota durum harvest is picking up pace as well with 31% of the crop harvested compared to 72% last year and 50% on average. An additional two-thirds of the crop has reached maturity. The warmer, drier conditions this week should provide good harvest conditions for the crop that is ready. Yield reports thus far have been limited and no major quality issues have been reported. Harvest in Montana has progressed a bit more rapidly with 61% harvested, close to average.
