Based on October 1 conditions, South Dakota's 2022 corn production is forecast at 683 million bushels, down 7% from last year's production, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Area to be harvested for grain, at 5.25 million acres, is down 4% from a year ago. Yield is forecast at 130 bushels per acre, down 4 bushels from last year.
Sorghum for grain is forecast at 14.6 million bushels, up 8% from last year. Area for harvest, at 205,000 acres, is down 2% from 2021. Yield is forecast at 71 bushels per acre, up 7 bushels from last year.
Soybean production is a record forecast at 202 million bushels, down 6% from last year. Area for harvest, at 5.05 million acres, is down 6% from 2021. Yield is forecast at 40 bushels per acre, unchanged from last year.
All sunflower production is forecast at 1.20 billion pounds, up 47% from last year. Acreage for harvest, at 629,000 acres, is up 128,000 acres from 2021. Yield is forecast at 1,912 pounds per acre, up 280 pounds per acre from a year ago. Of the acres for harvest, non-oil sunflowers account for 39,000 acres and oil sunflowers account for 590,000 acres.
Alfalfa hay production, at 2.24 million tons, is up 15% from last year. Area for harvest, at 1.60 million acres, is up 23% from a year ago. Yield of 1.40 tons per acre, is down 0.10 ton from 2021. All other hay production, at 1.82 million tons, is up 58% from last year. Area for harvest, at 1.40 million acres, is up 27% from a year ago. Yield of 1.30 tons per acre, is up 0.25 ton.
