S.D. Corn and Soybeans Slow to Emerge This Year



For the week ending Sunday, there were 5.1 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 3% very short, 13% short, 67% adequate, and 17% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 4% very short, 18% short, 66% adequate, and 12% surplus.

Corn condition rated 0% very poor, 2% poor, 22% fair, 68% good, and 8% excellent. Corn planted was 97%, near 100% last year and 94% for the five-year average. Emerged was 85%, behind 96% last year, and near 86% average.

Soybean condition rated 0% very poor, 3% poor, 33% fair, 58% good, and 6% excellent. Soybeans planted was 93%, near 97% last year and 89% average. Emerged was 55%, well behind 93% last year, and behind 74% average.

Winter wheat condition rated 2% very poor, 22% poor, 37% fair, 31% good, and 8% excellent. Winter wheat headed was 55%, well behind 85% last year, and behind 73% average.

Spring wheat condition rated 0% very poor, 15% poor, 28% fair, 56% good, and 1% excellent. Spring wheat emerged was 96%, near 99% last year and 98% average. Headed was 8%, well behind 41% last year, and behind 26% average.

Oats condition rated 0% very poor, 9% poor, 35% fair, 52% good, and 4% excellent. Oats emerged was 93%, behind 99% last year, and near 96% average. Headed was 16%, well behind 50% last year, and behind 30% average.

Sorghum condition rated 2% very poor, 5% poor, 37% fair, 56% good, and 0% excellent. Sorghum planted was 74%, behind 92% last year and 80% average. Headed was 1%, near 3% last year, and equal to average.

Sunflowers planted was 56%, behind 75% last year and 63% average.

Pasture and range conditions rated 6% very poor, 22% poor, 37% fair, 29% good, and 6% excellent.
