SDSU Offers Gardening Lessons This May

SDSU Offers Gardening Lessons This May

By Scout Nelson

South Dakota State University Extension will host the second annual Backyard Natural Resources webinar series in May 2025. This free, virtual series is designed for both new and experienced gardeners looking to improve their lawn and garden practices.

The series includes four hour-long sessions on May 6, 8, 13, and 15. Topics focus on natural resources such as soil, water, insects, and climate—all essential to successful backyard gardening. Registration is required to receive the Zoom link. Interested participants can sign up by visiting the SDSU Extension Events page and searching “backyard.”

The first session on May 6 will cover soil health, led by an expert from the South Dakota Soil Health Coalition. On May 8, participants will learn about rainwater harvesting and water-saving strategies from SDSU Extension’s horticulture specialists.

The third session, on May 13, will explore how to “balance bugs and blooms.” This session highlights how helpful insects contribute to a thriving outdoor ecosystem. “How can we get cool with pests while managing the ones that are eating things we don’t want them to eat?” said one presenter. “If you want to find out what insect I consider to be nature’s garden plankton, join us.”

The final session on May 15 will provide a spring climate outlook and advice on gardening during drought conditions.

All sessions are presented in a casual, lunch-and-learn format that encourages questions and interaction. Experts will share tips that apply to small spaces, such as community gardens or apartment balconies.

Those unable to attend live can watch recorded sessions later on the SDSU Extension YouTube channel.

This series helps gardeners understand and care for natural resources in practical, everyday ways.
