The South Dakota State Fair invites media and fairgoers to celebrate Farmers Union Day on Saturday, August 31. As the premiere sponsor and the state's largest agricultural organization, Farmers Union is set to offer a series of educational and engaging events near the Freedom Stage, emphasizing the vital role of agriculture in South Dakota.
The day kicks off at 11:30 a.m. with the Farmers Share Lunch, where 1,000 attendees will enjoy a meal for just 50 cents. This event shows the disparity between grocery store prices and what farmers earn from them.
This year's menu includes a sandwich, milk, and chips, with farmers receiving just 48 cents from the cost. All proceeds from this initiative will benefit Make-A-Wish.
At 1 p.m., the focus shifts to the Public Utilities Commission Candidate Forum, where fairgoers can engage with candidates like Kristi Fiegen, Gideon Oakes, and Forrest Wilson. This forum provides a unique platform for agriculture producers and property owners to voice concerns and learn more about candidate positions on crucial policy issues, including property rights.
The day’s activities continue at 2 p.m. with the Farm Safety Quiz Bowl Championships, highlighting the importance of safety in one of the nation's most hazardous industries. Teams from Canton, Milbank, Platte-Geddes, and Wessington Springs, having qualified at the State FFA Convention, will compete, testing their knowledge on farm safety.
Farmers Union Day is not just an opportunity to enjoy the fair but also a chance to gain valuable insights into the agricultural sector’s challenges and the safety measures necessary for farming and ranching. It promises to be a day full of learning, safety education, and community involvement.
