South Dakota Soils Looking for Some Moisture



For the week ending Sunday, there were 6.0 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 22% very short, 39% short, 37% adequate, and 2% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 23% very short, 36% short, 39% adequate, and 2% surplus.

Corn condition rated 9% very poor, 14% poor, 26% fair, 43% good, and 8% excellent. Corn dough was 84%, near 88% last year, and equal to the five-year average.Dented was 36%, near 40% last year and 37% average.

Soybean condition rated 3% very poor, 12% poor, 30% fair, 48% good, and 7% excellent. Soybeans setting pods was 92%, behind 97% last year, and equal to average. Dropping leaves was 6%, behind 22% last year and 13% average.

Spring wheat harvested was 92%, behind 98% last year, but near 90% average.

Oats harvested was 92%, behind 98% last year, and near 95% average.

Sorghum condition rated 4% very poor, 18% poor, 46% fair, 32% good, and 0% excellent. Sorghum headed was 98%, near 95% last year and 94% average. Coloring was 35%, behind 48% last year and 40% average. Mature was 10%, ahead of 1% last year and 2% average.

Pasture and range conditions rated 23% very poor, 32% poor, 27% fair, 17% good, and 1% excellent.
