Young Farm Leaders Advocate Agriculture in Washington

Young Farm Leaders Advocate Agriculture in Washington

By Jamie Martin

Young leaders in agriculture from across the United States traveled to Washington, D.C. from June 2 to 6 to meet with congressional representatives and key decision-makers to discuss urgent agricultural issues.

These members are part of a national Young Farmer and Agriculturist (YFA) program, which supports aspiring leaders aged 18 to 35.

The initiative builds skills, develops leadership potential, and provides networking opportunities for future agriculture professionals.

While in the nation’s capital, the group met with staff at the American Farm Bureau Federation and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to talk about pressing challenges such as workforce shortages, dairy pricing, sustainability goals, tariffs, and the upcoming farm bill.

A highlight of the trip included a visit to the Mexican Embassy, where discussions focused on U.S.-Mexico trade relations and opportunities in agricultural markets.

The young leaders also met with members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, sharing how national policies impact their work on farms or in agribusiness roles.

“As young leaders in agriculture, we have a responsibility to share our stories—if we don’t, someone else will tell it for us,” said Kendall Riskedal, Chair of the YFA program.

The group emphasized the importance of supporting young people in agriculture to maintain a sustainable and secure food system. They also called for stronger pathways to help young adults take part in family farms and agricultural careers.

These annual advocacy trips help ensure the next generation of farmers are included in policy conversations that shape the future of American agriculture.
