South Dakota Hog Inventory Up 3 Percent

South Dakota inventory of all hogs and pigs on September 1, 2022, was 2.08 million head, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. This was up 3% from September 1, 2021, but down 2% from June 1, 2022.

Breeding hog inventory, at 300,000 head, was up 13% from September 1, 2021, and up 3% from last quarter.

Market hog inventory, at 1.78 million head, was up 2% from last year, but down 3% from last quarter.

The June - August 2022 South Dakota pig crop, at 1.79 million head, was up 11% from 2021. Sows farrowed during the period totaled 142,000 head, up 11% from last year. The average pigs saved per litter was 12.60 for the June-August period, compared to 12.60 last year.

South Dakota hog producers intend to farrow 143,000 sows during the September-November 2022 quarter, up 8% from the actual farrowings during the same period a year ago. Intended farrowings for December 2022-February 2023 are 143,000 sows, up 12% from the actual farrowings during the same period a year ago.
