Dakota Lakes Field Day Features Wheat Research

Dakota Lakes Field Day Features Wheat Research

By Scout Nelson

Farmers, crop advisers, and agricultural professionals are invited to attend the South Dakota State University Dakota Lakes Research Farm Field Day on June 26, 2026, near Pierre, South Dakota. The event provides an opportunity to learn about important agricultural research projects taking place in central South Dakota.

The day begins at 3 p.m. at the Dakota Lakes Research Farm. Visitors will have the chance to explore research plots and learn about farming practices that have been studied for more than three decades. The farm is known for its long-term no-till and crop rotation research, making it a unique location for agricultural education.

Several important topics will be featured during the tours. Attendees will receive updates on oat breeding and field trials, wheat breeding and field trials, crop rotation systems, irrigation management, livestock integration, and practical research techniques that farmers can apply to their own operations.

One of the most valuable aspects of the event is the opportunity to see long-term research projects in action. More than a dozen crops are grown throughout the farm, helping researchers study sustainable farming methods and ways to improve productivity while protecting natural resources.

Certified crop advisers attending the event can also earn continuing education credits. The field day is designed to share information that benefits both local producers and farmers from other regions.

“We will present about SDSU research projects focused on the central part of the state but will also cover principles that apply to farming everywhere,” said Natalie Sturm, farm manager at Dakota Lakes. “We do a lot of long-term research that is very unique and demonstrates the successful use of good agricultural practices.”

Sturm recently began her role as farm manager and looks forward to connecting with farmers and industry stakeholders during the event.

“I’m hoping to meet a lot of people,” Sturm said. “I really like talking to people about farming and agriculture and Dakota Lakes is a good demonstration of different practices for farmers.”

The event concludes with a sponsored meal, SDSU ice cream, giveaway items, and prize drawings. Attendance is free, but registration is encouraged to help organizers prepare materials and meals.

The Dakota Lakes Research Farm operates through a partnership between SDSU and Dakota Lakes Corp., a farmer-led nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing agricultural research and education.
