South Dakota Promotes Rural Travel Adventures

By Scout Nelson

The South Dakota Department of Tourism has launched a new Agritourism Adventures Passport to encourage visitors to explore farms, ranches, and rural attractions across the state. The new passport becomes part of the larger Travel South Dakota Passport Program, which promotes tourism and supports local communities.

The Agritourism Adventures Passport features 40 different locations throughout South Dakota. Visitors can check in at working farms, dairies, flower farms, museums, ranches, and other agriculture-related destinations. The program is designed to help travelers learn more about farming, rural life, and South Dakota agriculture while supporting local businesses.

“South Dakota’s agricultural heritage is a cornerstone of our state,” said James Hagen, Secretary of the South Dakota Department of Tourism. “This passport invites people to experience the real South Dakota, learn where their food comes from, meet farmers and ranchers, experience rural life and discover unexpected locations.”

The passport includes several popular agritourism stops around the state. Featured locations include Back Forty Beef Adventure Farm and Corn Maze near Pierpont, Blue Tin Ranch near Burbank, Dimock Dairy Products in Dimock, Farm Life Creamery near Ethan, Flourish Flower Farm near Elk Point, Hydeout Agritourism near Highmore, The Good Earth Farm near Lennox, and the South Dakota Tractor Museum in Kimball.

Travel South Dakota explains that the passport works through a mobile platform. Participants receive the free passport instantly through text message or email, and no app download is required. Visitors can use GPS technology to check in when arriving at participating locations.

Each check-in earns points that participants can collect over time. Travelers can redeem these points for prizes including souvenirs, clothing, and outdoor gear. The program encourages repeat visits while helping travelers discover different parts of South Dakota.

Officials say the passport also helps small towns and rural communities by bringing more visitors to local attractions, farms, and businesses. Travelers can sign up for the Agritourism Adventures Passport and begin planning their route at TravelSouthDakota.com/Passports.
