AI Trends Highlight South Dakota Agriculture Event

By Scout Nelson

The South Dakota Farmers Union State Convention brings family farmers, ranchers, and agriculture experts together to discuss important issues shaping the future of farming. The two-day event focuses on policy, education, and new ideas that support strong agriculture and fair opportunities for producers across the state.

During the convention, members of the state’s largest farm organization take part in the yearly Policy Meeting. Here, they review and update policy that guides the group’s advocacy work. Delegates also take part in leadership elections.

The discussions include topics such as the growing impact of artificial intelligence on production agriculture, new ways to understand global challenges, animal health updates, and the value of checkoff programs.

Education remains a key priority for the organization. Leaders explain that the convention gives farmers access to experts who help them make informed decisions during uncertain times. Speakers include state and national leaders, researchers, animal health specialists, and technology experts who work with AI in agriculture.

Policy development is especially important this year. Many producers continue to face unstable crop and cattle markets and concerns about foreign beef imports. Because of these challenges, farmers slow down their 2026 planning as they wait for clearer market signals. The convention’s grassroots policy efforts support issues such as reinstating Mandatory Country-of-Origin Labeling, keeping the Farm Bill current, and protecting SNAP.

Members also vote on Special Orders that focus on preventing harmful consolidation and foreign ownership in the food system.

Farmers emphasize that grassroots policy protects their livelihoods and strengthens local communities. They believe that active involvement helps ensure fair markets and a safe national food supply.

Convention leaders add that reconnecting with other producers is an important part of the event, allowing members to learn from each other and build strong relationships.

The convention begins on December 10 in Huron. The Policy Meeting is held on the first day, and elections take place on December 11.
