Family Farmers Speak Out at South Dakota Farmers Union Convention

By Scout Nelson

Family farmers and ranchers across South Dakota came together during the 110th South Dakota Farmers Union State Convention to speak openly about the challenges facing agriculture and rural communities.

Held December 10 and 11 in Huron, the convention focused on low commodity prices, trade pressures, and the continued wait for an updated Farm Bill.

National Farmers Union President Rob Larew encouraged producers to stand firm during difficult times. He acknowledged the polite and respectful nature of South Dakotans but stressed that farmers and ranchers must also be strong and persistent when it comes to protecting their livelihoods and communities.

He highlighted concerns about weak market transparency, especially in the beef sector, and the loss of rural health care services. Larew emphasized that family farms and ranches need fair opportunities and policies that support long term stability.

Many members expressed appreciation for Farmers Union advocacy at both state and national levels.

Producers shared that having a strong organization working on farm friendly policy is especially important during periods of low prices and uncertainty. Several farmers noted that the Farmers Union provides a trusted voice and a safety net when times are tough.

The convention also highlighted strong youth involvement. College students and young producers attended policy meetings, shared their views, and participated in discussions.

Many said it is their responsibility to be involved now, not later, because farm policy decisions shape their future. High school and college members described how Farmers Union programs helped them learn about leadership, policy, and career paths in agriculture.

During the event, members discussed policy priorities and voted on Special Orders. Fourteen family farmers and ranchers were elected as delegates to represent South Dakota at the National Farmers Union Convention.

These delegates come from communities across the state and reflect a wide range of farming and ranching backgrounds.

Convention speakers also addressed broader topics affecting agriculture and rural life. Attendees said hearing from state leaders who understand farming and ranching challenges helped build pride and motivation. Sessions covered policy, markets, emerging technology, and the importance of strong rural connections.

South Dakota Farmers Union leaders noted that the convention offers a valuable opportunity for farmers and ranchers of all ages to connect, share experiences, and discuss real kitchen table issues.

Despite ongoing challenges, the strong participation and growing youth involvement were seen as positive signs for the future of agriculture and rural communities in South Dakota.
