South Dakota State University Extension invites forage producers and industry professionals to attend the Northern Plains Forage Association annual meeting.
The event offers a full day of forage-related learning, research updates, and discussion on current production challenges. It provides an important opportunity for producers to stay informed about new tools, practices, and technologies in the forage industry.
The meeting takes place on December 11, 2025, at the Holiday Inn Express in Brandon, running from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. CST. Registration is encouraged, with free admission for Northern Plains Forage Association members. Non-members may attend for a small fee, which includes lunch. Participants may register online through the SDSU Extension Events page.
SDSU Extension Forage Field Specialist Sara Bauder says the meeting helps support learning, connection, and professional growth among forage producers. She explains that producers in the region deserve access to local education and networking, and the event brings high-quality speakers and research updates directly to them.
A key feature of the meeting is the keynote presentation from Erika Rodbell, a forage research agronomist with Forage Genetics International. She will discuss alfalfa weevils, a major pest concern for many forage producers. The session will help producers better understand current pest issues and management strategies.
Following the keynote, Peter Sexton, an associate professor and SDSU Extension specialist, will share research from the Southeast Research Farm. His session focuses on sorghum and corn intercropping and how these systems may be used in feedlot backgrounding diets.
This research offers producers insight into alternative cropping strategies that support livestock nutrition.
Additional presentations during the meeting explore integrating crop systems with livestock, along with a panel discussion on baleage. These topics help producers improve forage quality, diversify production, and strengthen their operations.
The day concludes with the Northern Plains Forage Association’s annual business meeting and election of board members. Producers looking for more information may contact Sara Bauder at SDSU Extension.
